Steven Spielberg’s â€Å"Lincoln† (2012) The â€Å"Lincoln† started in January 1865. It was the second month since Abraham Lincoln’s reelection and the fourth year of the American Civil War. The â€Å"Lincoln† is a history of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy in dealing with the casualties in the Civil War battlefield and the debates over the passage of Thirteenth Amendment. In a nation divided by war and the eagerness of change, Lincoln strived for the end of the Civil War, the unity of the country and the abolishment of slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment is a law that President Lincoln proposed to the Congress. It is an amendment to abolish slavery in the nation. It was important to President Lincoln to pass it before the end of the war because once the war ended, the passage of Thirteenth Amendment would not gain the supports of the Northern people who saw the Thirteenth Amendment as a military necessity to end the long, wearying war. He wanted the Thirteenth Amendment to pass because he did not agree that slaves are legal properties. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the declaration of freedom for the slaves; however, it might be considered as illegal after the war and the freed people would be returned to slaves. If the Thirteenth Amendment was passed, the slaves would be forever legally free.
